Assignment one Resource Project

Continues with assignment one and updating my blog. Reading and responding to discussion board. Not feeling very well today...but happy with what I need to do so far..

Completed & saved: Wednesday 03 January 2007

Today, I continue with Resource Project researching. Using the Copenic Search Agent, I found a very good website on “Guide to effective searching of the Internet” A BrightPlanet Tutorial from URL: http://www.brightplanet.com/resources/details/tutorials.html
I decided to post this in Module 4 as a Tutorial for other students in the discussion board.

Reading tasks and continuing with assignment one Resource Project Annotated Bibliography.

Organising Search Information Task (cont..)

Decide whether or not you will include the source as part of your 'resource bank assignment'I will include UC Berkeley - Teaching Library site as part of my ‘resource bank assignment’ as this site contains excellent source of information for anyone who is interested in exploring and searching the internet using the recommended searching tools. The main idea of this site is to educate people in finding information on the internet from basics to evaluating the web.

I have learned heaps of valuable information from this site and I will use them effectively as a resource site for my learning process. The UC Berkeley - Teaching Library has evidenced resources well referenced to other external sources indicating credibility of its site. It provides detailed skillful techniques for web evaluation by having links to critically investigating a website.

I would say the original ‘snapshot’ of the site for me is the complexity of its content. I would greatly make full use of this site to continuously updating my knowledge in completing this unit – NET11!

As for external users, I suggest they explore this site and make it one of their resources bank as well. I am sure they will appreciate the techniques and questions to ask when evaluating a website.

Organising Search Information Task

Module 3: Tasks

HTML Tag

Tonight I read the course content and HTML Tutorials and some other links relating to this module. I am glad I have just learned and finished the Web Site assignment of the last unit with RMIT before commencing this unit. I have never written HTML and everything was new to me. We were not allowed to use any program such as Dreamweaver. I have come across load of difficulties when creating my first website from scratch by hand. However with persistence, I tried again and again going through the W3C website on How to…..etc... And the examples helped made my website to completion. Thank God…I received full mark for my first website!!

WWW Standards
Summary of 5 most important ‘rules’ for writing online:

  1. Important issues on top of page
  2. Make use of sub-headings and bullet points and bold keywords
  3. Easy to navigate with consistent look and feel
  4. Simple design for quick download
  5. Provide useful and meaningful links
Think about any differences between the articles: for example, is the advice in Nielsen’s paper -- written in 1997 – still current?
I think all the articles are good advice of similar concept of usability and Nielsen’s paper written in 1997 is still current.

FTP
I have uploaded my Webspace using the Ipswitch WS_FTP Client program I downloaded before from http://www.ipswitch.com/ to my ISP the URL is ftp://members.iinet.net.au/

Completed and saved: Wednesday 13 December 2006
I read all discussions posted, updating my learning log in words and backing up all my work. Also as I prepared myself for Module 3, I read the course contents and tasks required. With that in mind I explored some of the students’ work.

Completed and saved: Tuesday, 12 December 2006
Well, last night I edited my blog, updated some of the completed tasks in Module 1 and 2. This morning I have a chance to help answer one of the posts (Message 847 in Module 1). I did some research on Internet Detective trying to refresh my memory. I had actually studied and done this before in one of my completed OUA units at Swinburne University. I have included the links for other students’ quick reference:

http://www.mmsd.org/tnl/detectives/evaluation.htm
http://www.vts.intute.ac.uk/detective/

I tested myself and answered most of the detective work. I then moved on to do my module one second website summary and evaluation. I checked and read again the discussion posted before going to bed at 11:50pm. Feeling exhausted! Luckily I can sleep in tomorrow morning my day off. :-D

Optional ‘standards’ task 2:
As mentioned before in Module, I have tested my webpage usingW3C Validator.

NEWSGROUPS

Tonight, I downloaded this newsreader software from http://www.newsrover.com/getit.htm and tried to work out how to use it but it gave me a hard time and I decided to abandon it. I finally signed up Google Groups and posted a message regarding weight loss articles. Here is the screen shot including my message:

Email Tasks

Completed and saved: Tuesday, 5 December 2006

1. What information about a user's email, the origin of a message, and the path it took, can you glean from an email message?

An email message contains metadata that tells us who the email is address to; who the email comes from; what is the email's subject; who else is receiving copies of the email and the urgency of the message and the time when the email was sent.

2. In what cases would you find it useful to use the 'cc', 'bcc' and 'reply all functions of email?

Carbon copy (cc) is useful when you want a message to be sent to somebody who should know and do nothing about it. Blind carbon copy (bcc) is used to send a message secretly. Reply all function is useful when you want all recipients in the To Field to be informed of a response from you. The same subject is automatically copied with RE: in the subject field. Replying this way can avoid mistakes and save time and is culturally important.

3. In what ways can you ensure that an attachment you send will be easily opened by the receiver?

Email attachment preferable be sent in MIME (Multipurpose Internet Mail Extensions) to ensure it is easily opened by the receivers no matter what mail program or computer type they are using.

4. What sorts of filters or rules do you have set up, and for what purpose?

I have set up rules to filter emails into folders by subject for security purpose. For example, subject contains one or more FW: are filtered for quarantine into separate folder. Subject such as Hello, Be quick or Your Bank Account etc are filtered into Spam Folder and to delete emails with the word ‘porn’ These emails may contain virus infected attachment that can completely shut down your computer.

5. How have you organised the folder structure of your email and why?

I have organized the folder structure of my emails in different categories such as friends, relatives, education and others. They allow me to access them easily for future use and for reference.

Email Lists:

· What are the pros and cons of email lists versus discussion boards?

Email lists as a system is that they are unthreaded in terms of sorting, making it hard to identify the order in which posts were sent. They are also too narrowly focused overtime. Discussion Boards are similar to Newsgroups - a continuous public discussion about a particular topic. The messages are not maintained on a single server, but are replicated to servers world-wide. Discussions such as WebCT are kept and maintained by a single server at Curtin University.

· Are there certain kinds of communication or purposes more suited to one than the other?

If you need immediate answer and wish to communicate with more than one person or a small group, the following is useful: Chat room allows a group of people to type in messages with conversation seen by everyone in the “room”. Instant messages allow you to keep a list of people you wish to interact with in real time.

Creating My Webspace

Having set up my blog for learning log, I'm ready to put everything together and be more organised. This morning I created my webspace with all 3 assessments accessible easily. I'm so thankful to all fellow students who have posted their presentations in such a way that I can view them whenever I want to gain some knowledge of what is expected.

I read all discussions posted and made notes of what are to be done. Before I upload my Webspace for presentation I checked my site validation from http://www.w3.org.

Well, next I'll do some research for Module 2 and at the same time gather some useful resources for Assessment 1.

Module 2

Today I explored the WebCT Module 2 and skimmed through the subject outline and contents. I also tried to keep myself informed of discussions and find out any tips that are of related to this topic. Due to limited time, I have to read again tomorrow to better understand what the task requirements are.

Internet Tools

Today I checked and read the discussions posted in the office. After work, I started to look at the Traceroute task and run succussfully from http://visualroute.visualware.com/ and also http://network-tool.com/

Well, it's 10:57pm I have finally worked out the FTP task from the address bar and found the readme.txt and have also self tested myself and answered them all correct. I found the following site very useful:

Telnet

I'm glad that both emails sent from Deakin Library were received successfully. I used student email and discovered what I haven't done the declaration. So, I sent an email to Cynthia to declare the use of Oasis.

I read through all the discussions and reponded one of the posts. I made some adjustments to my blog and also trying to make it more presentable.

Before I retired for the day, I posted another thread asking for help regarding FTP.

Getting Started

It was an exciting moment everytime I started a new unit especially with a completely new environment, this time the Curtin University. I set up everything that was needed before the commencing date - Monday, 27/11/2006.

Finally, it's time to find out what is up for this unit. Oh..oh.. I started to feel the pressure already after going through Cynthia, the tutor's long post. I introduced my self to Cynthia and everyone else briefly in the post. (Oh yes, my first internet experience was when I first started my IT studies with TAFE back in 1998. Before this I had a few short courses in computing. I started online learning with OUA in May 2005.)

I realised in order to make myself more organise, I must quickly get my learning log started and here it is....very thankful to everyone for all the valuable information and discussions!
